Lazy Trick-or-Treaters

I always get excited about Halloween. Let's be honest, I get excited about anything that even remotely resembles a holiday -- but Halloween is an extra treat. It's just always been one of my favorites. I love watching scary movies and going to haunted houses. And I especially love seeing the kids all dressed up and handing out candy and seeing their little faces light up "ohhhh, Snickers!" or "ohhh, Reese's." That's right, we get the good candy in the MacAlpine household.

This year was no different. I went out and bought a ton of candy (OK, I skimped a little and bought the Tootsie Roll Child's Play mix thing, but I did get some Kit-Kats and Butterfingers too), put the lit up pumpkin out, and turned on every light to alert trick-or-treaters that I was open for business. I was ready. I had taken Layla out earlier and saw that the kids were already at it.

Then I waited. And I waited. I heard the kids out yelling and laughing and running out, but nobody was knocking on my door. I was not about to be stuck with 5 bags of candy, so I popped my head out and looked around. That's when I found out that the trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood are unbelievably lazy. See, there are about 10 steps up to my townhouse and apparently that's just too much for kids to risk when they aren't absolutely sure you have candy.

I noticed a bunch of people standing on their porches or sitting on their stairs waiting for the kids. Wow. So I'm thinking the grown-ups have allowed these kids to get lazy. And apparently their candy intake wasn't suffering too much either. I stood outside for a while and handed out candy and the kids would proceed to run to their moms, empty their bags into larger bags and head on their way. I'm thinking with the amount of candy these kids were taking in, walking up and down a few stairs would probably have been a good thing.

Unfortunately I got bored with sitting outside pretty early and since Andy had to work late and couldn't take second shift on the stairs, I just came back in to cook dinner and get some work done. A few stragglers knocked on the door, but by 8:00 I just turned the lights out and called it a night. Not a bad thing by any means. I got to see some adorable kids, got rid of most of the candy, and was finished early enough to watch a cute Halloween movie.

Angie, I know exactly what you mean. Most adults were sitting outside in our neighborhood too. We had a record year this year, with about 10 knocks on the door! I know how much you love Halloween. Remember when we went out that year to the church and the old trees to see if the superstiions would work?!?! I'm too old for that now. I get scared watching Lost - I had to close my eyes and cover my hears twice last night!!
