A much-needed trip

Yesterday, somewhat on a whim, Andy and I decided to drive to Charlottesville and take a couple days off together. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn just a couple miles from the historic downtown area, University of Virginia, and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.

The hotel was fantastic (props to my hubby for finding it!) and there was a bottle of champagne awaiting us upon arrival -- plus it came with free breakfast. And what a deal we got on the room!

Anyway, we arrived in Charlottesville around 1 or so and drove around town for a bit before hitting the Monticello visitor's center (which isn't actually on the property). We had a tour the next morning, but knew we were on a tight schedule, so we did the museum part that first day. After that, we checked into the hotel and then headed over to the college campus. I didn't realize all the history there -- and what an amazing campus it is!

I knew Thomas Jefferson was considered the "father of the university" but I didn't know to what extent he was involved and what his vision was for the school. Plus he helped design the rotunda, which is gorgeous.

As usual, I have far more photos than I can put in one blog, so I'll split these up. Here's a few pictures from our campus tour. I'll post more in the coming blogs.

Here's the front of the rotunda -- the central spot on the UVA campus. This was Jefferson's vision for the heart of the university.

Here's a shot from the back of the rotunda. Surrounding this building along the sides are dorm rooms for 4th-year students who have dedicated themselves to the university and their educations and made an impact on the culture there. It's considered a HUGE honor to stay in these rooms.

Here's a closer view from the back.

This is the room where Edgar Allen Poe stayed during his brief period at UVA. Note the raven statue in the window.

This is the rotunda from the inside. More pictures and stories to come tomorrow night. I'm sleepy and am going to bed :)
