Taking The Long Way Around

Tomorrow, I'm headed to northern California to visit with family. I'll be going there via Houston ... and Los Angeles ... and Medford, Oregon. My flight leaves at 3 p.m., but I won't get to Medford until 2:30 a.m. my time. Then on the way back I get to visit more cities as I go from Medford to Portland to San Francisco to Chicago to Baltimore. Good times. No, I won't be checking my bags as they won't have a snowball's chance of keeping up with me.

Gotta love buying tickets late and having to do whatever you can to make them affordable ... like make three stops. Keep your fingers crossed that I make all the legs of my flight!

Despite the travel route, I'm really looking forward to the trip. I haven't seen my Grandpa in years, and it will be really nice to visit with him. We're having a very small graveside service for my Grandma on Saturday. She passed away last March, but my Grandpa wasn't quite ready to have a funeral at that time. I guess he's doing a little better now, and he's ready to start letting go a little at least -- so we'll bury her ashes in the family cemetery in Hornbrook, California, and then have a family gathering afterward.

I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to her in person, so I'm happy to get a chance to pay my respects and offer my support to my Grandpa. Please keep my family in your thoughts this weekend as I know this will be hard on a lot of people who had put off the emotions that go with saying goodbye for the last time.

On the upside, my Grandpa is doing as well as can be expected and is really looking forward to having company -- especially since my Grandma's birthday is Tuesday. My Grandpa has always had a special place in my heart, and I can't wait to see him!

I'll report back when I get back in town next week, and I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures to share with you guys. It's beautiful country up there and I know my dad will want to tour all his old stomping grounds, so I'll bring the camera :)
