The Fox and the Hound

As I've mentioned before, our townhouse backs to a large open field with a pond in the middle. That field is home to all kinds of wildlife -- deer, foxes, and recently even a couple coyotes. My favorite are the red foxes.

The first time I saw one here, I was walking Layla early in the morning -- before the sun had fully come up. We were nearing the playground, and the fox came walking around a corner behind a fenced yard. I didn't notice him at first, but Layla froze and stared over at him, so I looked over. I've never seen a fox up close before. He was beautiful! And much bigger than I had expected. We were all three caught off guard and none of us knew what to do. Nobody moved -- not me, not Layla, not the fox. Then suddenly Layla barked and the fox took off. I thought that might be my last good close-up look at him.

But lately the brave fox has been coming pretty close to the house. Everytime he gets near, Layla goes nuts. Barking and yelping.

On my birthday, Monday, we got a good bit of snow. A couple days later, I looked out at our back deck and saw pawprints in the snow. Weird because our deck is gated and we never use it so they weren't Layla's prints. I told Andy and we kind of dismissed it as a stray cat or something.

Then, just a few minutes ago we were downstairs watching TV and Andy said "The fox is on the deck!" I look over, and sure enough, there he is. He tripped our security light and Layla started barking. But she didn't know quite what to do and ran upstairs trying to get to the windows in the living room. Then the fox did something crazy -- he walked right up the door and peered in. He had his nose on the door looking in! It was like he was thinking, "I wonder what's going on in there? Anything good on TV?" At that moment Layla came tearing back down the stairs and barking like a maniac. The fox took off and slipped through the fence. He took a couple last looks over at us to see what the commotion was before running off over the hill and out of sight.

So it looks like we have a fox that frequents our back deck. Pretty cool. I guess I should think of a name ... any ideas? :)

I couldn't get a picture, but he looks like this
